What are we expecting from our staff?
The most important requirement to be part of Kajuyalí’s Staff is to have a desire to work with people and to serve others. Our number one objective is to be fully responsible over all the people in the camps, so that all the campers or staff members can experience the full potential and growth in our camps. All those who work for Kajuyalí Camp have to enjoy and be capable of cultivating the growth process of all those around them.
In Kajuyalí we are searching for people with leadership skills, capable of managing groups in a mature, responsible and professional way. People dedicated to continuing and expanding on the traditions at Kajuyalí, and of providing an excellent service. We are also searching for people that are highly interested in culture, nature and specially the outdoors.
The work inside a summer camp is very demanding; you will have very little free time. You will need a 24-hour availability during the camp season and the only days that are considered “free” are the ones between one season and another (known as “mercy days”). It is very important that all our staff have excellent mental and physical capabilities in order to deal with this challenge.
Every year we search for new people to work in our organization. Still there are limited spots for seasonal work and we are also conscientious that the success of our programs highly depends on the quality of the people that work with us; this is why we have a selection process that demands the most of you.
At Kajuyalí we reward effort, this is why the structure of the staff in a summer camp and the specific needs of a certain position allow you to grow and be promoted to jobs that require more experience and qualifications. Every course you take, every time you show your work and leadership skills count towards these promotions. This is why only individuals who have created a history in our organization hold positions such as the Villa Director and Camp Director.
The mission of all the individuals of our staff is to promote the proper environment for a learning process that will guarantee the physical, emotional and mental security and health of those that you will be in charge of. To achieve this mission we search for people with the following characteristics:

According to the physical capabilities of each person there will be an outdoor physical assessment outside of Bogota.
Furthermore, during this evaluation you will have the opportunity to show your abilities and knowledge of specific sports. Also you will be given the opportunity to attempt to solve potential summer camp cases.
Shortlist publication:
Once the applicant has completed all of the required steps of the selection process, the selection team will do a provisional selection of the staff based on the following criteria:

For the counselors, medics and administrative directors
For the CIT’s

Once the shortlist is published there will be a review of the spaces available that will depend on the number of campers that register for a particular season. The admission of a person to the staff is done only when the number of campers registered is confirmed.
The more registered campers, the more councelours that will be needed and thus positions available. This is why we provide you with the materials and with the tools for you to advertise the camps in those places that you frequently go to. If you recruit new campers (individuals that have never been at a camp in Kajuyalí) and they register, you will receive additional points that you can exchange for grants in your trainnning. You can communicate with the person in charge of marketing at Kajuyalí’s PBX to learn more.
Provisional allocation of the campsite:
The selection team will allocate the selected applicants after they have all the information from the previous steps. This allocation will be done with the objective in mind of creating a balanced team for each and every campsite and with the general wellbeing of the Kajuyalí project.
Please take into account that changes can happen at the last minute. Your final site shouldn’t but can change in order to accommodate our customers.
Contract signature and pre-seasonal training:
You will be able to know the dates of the camp seasons on the Kajuyalí website. It is very important that you have time during the weekends leading up to the start of the season in order to take the following courses:
First Aid: This course will take place from Friday to Monday during the first semester of the year; Kajuyalí offers this course in alliance with instructors, national and international entities certified to do so. Throughout the month there will be registrations for each one of the courses, inorder to fit your schedule. This course will be valid for a year from the date you finish the course.
The CIT’s have to pay the total cost of the first aid training two days before the course start at the latest. For the other members of the staff, Kajuyalí will subsidize the cost of the instructor but not the logistics, this person can choose to pay it or to have it discounted from the compensation he or she will have from the summer camp.
IDL (Leadership Identification Workshop) and TSR (Responsibility Sensibilization): it is usually done in the Kuita campsite, in the Eastern Plains of Colombia, during a long weekend at the beginning of June. The date of this workshop will be scheduled and communicated to the staff once the selection process is over.
Before taking these courses, Kajuyalí’s Staff Director will call the people who have been selected so that they sign a contract. The purpose of the contract is to have clarity of Kajuyalí’s commitment towards our staff as well as the commitment a person acquires when he becomes a member of Kajuyalí’s staff.

• Experience and knowledge of a specific region
• Trainning level in outdoors activities
• Group Management courses taken.
• First Aid training

What happens if I am not selected in this year’s process?
If you are not selected in this year’s selection process you will have the possibility to apply next year; you have to take in account that Kajuyalí’s selection process is tough and that conditions may vary from one year to another. We recommend that you improve the evaluated skills to increase the chances of being selected the following year.
Will I have free days?
Yes, in between camp seasons there is what we call “redemption or mercy days”, you will be able to rest on these days and recharge your batteries for the next season. At the same time you have to help in preparing the campsite for the next group of campers that will be on the way. In addition to this, you will workout with the Camp Director on a rest schedule that will be rotated with the other members of the staff.
If I apply to Kajuyalí with a friend, Can we both go to the same campsite?
Not necessarily. Campsite allocation is done in an independent manner without regard to ones desires to be with friends. Remember that at Kajuyali you will have the opportunity to meet people your age from different places, with different cultures that will become your friends.
If I was a camper at Kajuyalí, Do I have an advantage in the selection process?
Among the requirements for you to be part of the staff are positive leadership skills; these skills are better identified if you have previously been a camper. On the other hand, previously attending a camp is no guarantee that you will be a potential counselor; there are many variables that are taken into account in the extensive selection process.
What is my working schedule during the summer camp?
There is not a fixed schedule. Your work with the kids requires that you pay constant attention and this is why the working schedules are very long. Don’t worry, It is also very important for Kajuyalí that you have the necessary sleeping and resting time in order to be the best counselor that you can be.
What happens if I skip one of the steps of the selection process?
If you skip any of the steps in the selection process your chances of being selected are much lower, this is why we recommend that you organize your schedule ahead of time so that you can participate in all the steps of the process and attend all those that require your prescence.
What happens if I don’t attend one of the training dates?
Trainning is a requiriement to work at Kajuyalí, attendance to the IDL, TSR and first aid courses is mandatory. If you can’t go your chances of working at Kajuyalí will be very low.
What happens if I don’t take the first aid training?
The first aid course is a requirement for all members of Kajuyalí staff, if at the beginning of the camp season you have not fulfilled this requirement you will not be able to work at any of our campsites.
What happens if I break a rule in the summer camp or during trainning?
Once you are assigned a campsite the Camp Director will give you the manual containing Kajuyalí’s regulations and you will have to sign a work contract where you accept these regulations. The contract also describes what will happen if any rule is broken; being expelled from the camp is a possibility for the violation of camp rules.
If I am among the selected group, is this a warranty that I will work at a camp?
The number of counselors in each campsite depends on the number of campers registered to that camp. You may not be called to work if the number of campers is not high enough to provide work to all staff members. Chances increase as more campers register for the camp, but there is no guarantee.
You can increase your chances by recruiting campers to our camp. If your referenced camper has never been to Kajuyalí you will have some bonus points that you can later use to pay for your training.
Can I select which campsite to work at?
No, none of the staff members at Kajuyalí can choose which campsite they want to go to, it depends on the allocation process, of the members based on their skills, their job positions and their knowledge.
Can I work for only one season?
To work at Kajuyalí it is necessary that you are available to work for two seasons and it is possible that you will be required for a third season.
